Abstract

Abstract It is argued that the conception of objective modality isolated and motivated in Chapter 5 should be understood as metaphysical modality. First, the chapter distinguishes between questions concerning the target notion of metaphysical necessity, and questions concerning what metaphysical account we should give of the target notion. It is argued that the target notion of metaphysical necessity is the strictest real necessity. It is further argued that the kind of objective necessity introduced in Chapter 5 fits the bill for providing an account of the strictest real necessity. An appendix defends the notion of metaphysical necessity against several recent attacks.
