Abstract

Motivated by the suggestion that it may not be possible to approach the chiral limit of QCD with Wilson fermions from the confined phase, we attempt to find a definition of κ c on a finite lattice (where there is no continuous chiral symmetry) which is useful in practice. We propose that the smallest value of κ for which the Wilson kernel has a vanishing eigenvalue is such a definition, and we use it to study the phase diagram on an 8 3×4 lattice. We also verify that it is possible to reach the unbroken chiral limit on an 8 4 lattice at β = 5.0.
