Abstract

Allergy is extremely common, with allergies in one form or another affecting an estimated one third of the population in the United Kingdom (Sibbald et al, 1990). The term allergy was first used by von Pirquet in 1906 to describe altered reactivity to substances in our environment (von Pirquet, 1906).
