Abstract
The aim of this study is to examine the factors that influence the decision of buying, selling, or holding stocks of new traders in Semarang State University (UNNES). To identify the factors, primary data were collected from Investor Diary and interview results to traders who have just joined the Indonesian Stock Exchange for less than three months. The data were analyzed by triangulating and transforming the collected data become a useful information with the descriptive method using index numbers. The findings of the study indicated that the recent price movement in the firm stocks plays a major role in influencing new traders’ decision in buying and holding stocks while minimizing risk is the most influenced factor in selling stocks. The fact that all examined investor behaviors score for every variable were at a low level. It gives insights that new traders tend to analyze stocks technically only and give less attention to other important aspects. This result leads to the suggestion to an improvement of new traders’ knowledge and literacy about stock trading in order to enrich their references before deciding to buy, to hold, or to sell any particular stock.
