Abstract

For over eighty years, readers have debated whether Margot Macomber kills her husband Francis intentionally or accidentally as he is being charged by a wounded water buffalo during an African safari. The story's composition history is generally agreed to be between 1934-1936, following Hemingway's 1933 safari with his wife Pauline. However, a 1930 letter, newly published in The Letters of Ernest Hemingway: Volume 4, presents information about the 6.5 Mannlicher rifle, owned by Hemingway and the weapon used by Margot Macomber in the story that raises additional questions about the tragic ending.
