Abstract

Background Pharmaceutical expenses keep exerting pressure on health expenditures across Europe. A common strategy to stimulate the use of cheaper medicines is generic substitution and the use of the International Non-proprietary Name (INN) in medicine prescribing. Since 2006, Belgian physicians have to reach a minimum of ‘cheap’ prescriptions per year (including INN prescriptions).
