Abstract

There is a strong trend in ground based gamma ray (γ) astronomy to lower the energy threshold. The developments and ongoing construction of the 17m diameter MAGIC telescope allow one to make an extrapolation of the technical feasibility of an ultra large air Cherenkov telescope. We conclude that it is possible to build in the near future a 30–35 m diameter IACT with a threshold of ≈10 GeV (classical photomultipliers), respectively ∼4–5 GeV (high QE photomultipliers).
