Abstract

ABSTRACT The present study aimed to propose a model to examine the indirect effects of cyber dating abuse on the relationship between attachment style (preoccupied and fearful attachment) and depressive symptoms. Data were collected from 338 Portuguese young adults living in Lisbon who reported to have been in an intimate relationship in the last six months. The sample was predominantly female (77.8%). Hayes’ PROCESS macro in SPSS was used to test the hypothesized model. The results suggest that cyber dating abuse dimensions of direct aggression and controlling for victimization and perpetration had a significant indirect effect on the relationship between the aforementioned variables. Considering the current literature on cyber dating abuse, this study can be useful to provide a better understanding of this opaque phenomenon while leading to reflection on intervention programs to assist victims as well as implement policies to help prevent cyber dating abuse.
