Abstract

Using semiclassical S-matrix theory in a simulated electron-hydrogenscattering experiment and converged quantum calculations for the widths ofhigh-lying resonances in H− we show that resonance formation (or thelifetime of resonances) below the fragmentation threshold E = 0 and ionizationabove threshold have the same energy dependence |E|1.127 for |E| → 0.Hence, series ofresonances which have been characterized by approximate quantum numbers willdisappear towards threshold.
