Abstract

Background: The neonatal mortality rate (NMR) remains disturbingly high in Nigeria despite significant decline in parts of the developing world. The rural area NMR is higher compared to the urban rate with the Southeast region of Nigeria having the 2nd highest rate in 2013. Majority of these deaths are from preventable causes like intrapartum related events. Neonatal resuscitation (NR) programs are low-cost interventions shown to effectively reduce perinatal mortality.
