Abstract

When samples of grinding swarf obtained using Al 2O 3 and cubic boron nitride (CBN) grinding wheels under similar conditions are examined by a scanning electron microscope (SEM), two important differences are observed. The Al 2O 3 chips are shorter, thicker and more highly strained and there are a greater number of spherical particles present than when grinding with CBN. When these spherical particles are examined at high power, they are found to consist of a large number of small curved platelets. The purpose of this study is to suggest the origin of the small platelets and why there are more spheres and larger spheres present in the debris when grinding with Al 2O 3 than with CBN.
