What does marijuana legalization mean for campus police departments?

Abstract

As of this writing, 10 states plus the District of Columbia have fully legalized marijuana for recreational use. However, the drug remains illegal at the federal level. This puts public and most private universities within these states in an unusual position. To continue receiving federal funding, these institutions are required to have policies in place that conform to the Drug‐Free Workplace Act. Administrators and campus safety personnel must balance state and federal interests while maintaining a campus environment that supports student well‐being.
