Abstract

Finding practical solutions to global-scale problems is ultimately enhanced by, and indeed requires the collaboration and cooperation of the global scientific community. Three commonly recognized problems that fall into this category, and with ever-increasing urgency, are the threatened supply of fresh water, global climate change, and meeting the energy demands of modern society. The SEG membership is actively engaged in all of these issues, and the science and technology needed to address these problems, of course, knows no national boundaries. International scientific societies play a role in the solution to these problems by providing forums for improved communication that ultimately lead to opportunities for collaboration among geographically diverse scientific communities. The organizations may also enhance the research enterprise by helping coordinate scientific activities or maintaining and providing access to data sets. These relatively simple concepts may not be easily implemented because organizations must balance all activities with best business practices and responsible stewardship of funds while seeking to work in the best interest of their members.
