Abstract

A new study by Cardoso et al . provides illuminating and complementary perspectives on the measurement of neuronal activity using electrophysiology and intrinsic optical imaging. The authors' remarkable observation is that the haemodynamic (optical) responses can be separated into task and stimulus components, where only the stimulus-bound responses are accompanied by neuronal spiking.
