Abstract

This study deals with a seldom discussed aspect of the current crisis: the impact of energy resource development on small western United States communities. As these resources are developed, many communities will be faced with significant changes in population, lifestyles, and land use patterns. For local government and school officials the anxieties accompanying energy resource development are heightened. Answers to citizens' questions about their new neighbors and officials' fears about the responsibilities involved in increased population are a necessary part of the base for making decisions about the true value of development. Unfortunately, the answers are largely lacking and the developments are imminent. This study was designed to provide some answers about development impacts, based on the experience of one community, Hanna, Wyoming.
