Abstract
Teaching students how to read is at the core of the Rhodes University MA course â how to identify and explore reading that nourishes the writer, how to read a text for its pace and music, and ultimately how to read one's own work. The course also emphasises innovative writing in order to more accurately describe the cultural, physical and psychic spaces being explored. Innovative writing includes the demotic, the language of the writer's everyday speech and thought patterns, whether in one language or several, in their variations and hybrid forms.
