Abstract

AbstractPreservatives have played an important role in traditional topical ophthalmic medications. However, problems associated with preserved eye drops include ocular surface disease, poor tolerability and adherence, reduced quality of life, and increased risk of failure of glaucoma surgery. This presentation explores the evidence for and against the use of preservatives in glaucoma medications and explores whether preservative free drops should be first line for all. The cytotoxic effects of preservatives will be examined and practical advice provided on the management of iatrogenic ocular surface disease.
