Abstract

This paper analyses verbal associations which have been collected in an associative test. The test included two stimuli (Arabs and Arab) which have evoked 1,503 continuous reactions by 654 respondents. The collected reactions have been sorted by descending order and analysed through various thematic groups. The main goal was to gain insight into Serbian language speakers' perception of the Arab nation, as well as common stereotypes about it. The results thereby suggest that Serbian stereotypes about Arabs are mostly based on the mass media. The most common stereotypes are related to: symbols of wealth, living environment, clothing and physical appearance. Other reactions have been classified into smaller thematic groups: Serbian folk literature, war and religion, women, professions, other peoples, as well as several smaller groups, which were not subject to the analysis herein. Various positive and negative adjectives and picturesque expressions about Arabs have been analysed. The most frequent among them can be classified into the following categories: hygiene, degree of development, character traits, attitude towards others and the way of expressing emotions.
