Abstract
Campus recruitment by major oil companies for new hires has picked up; some geology departments are seeing oil‐company recruiters on campus for the first time in five years. So, what are the recruiters looking for? I served as a placement coordinator for the geology department at the University of Illinois at Urbana‐Champaign during the early 1970s, the late 1980s, and the early 1990s, and I observed certain common threads during each of the three periods. I will use these to answer the question.
