Abstract
The article offers a comprehensive survey of the Arabic transcriptions of Slavic geographical and personal names in early medieval Arab-Muslim geographical literature. The linguistic structure of Arabic and its orthography are briefly discussed in order to substantiate the relevance of Arabic evidence despite paleographic and systemic shortcomings in the transmission of Slavic names like Rusь, Dirь and Kyjevь by such geographers and historians as al-Mas'ūdī, Ibn Fađlān, al-Iṣṭakhrī, Ibn Ḥawqal and others. The article argues that the transcriptions furnish compelling evidence to be used in the historical phonology of Slavic and some adjacent disciplines.
