Abstract

Introduction: Data availability at high spatial resolutions, the power of statistical tools and advanced use of geographic information systems have resulted in a number of spatial assessments of risk and vulnerability and to heat stress in urban areas around the world. For Greater London, a heat vulnerability index (HVI) based on census data from 2001 had been developed. Now, an update of this heat vulnerability index for Greater London has now been undertaken. Methods: Based on a literature review on the risk factors of heat stress, freely available census data variables from 2011 are selected and feed into a Principal Component Analysis (PCA). The resulting components are combined into an updated heat vulnerability index and mapped. The updated HIV and the differences between the old and the new HVI are mapped. Results: While the risk factors for heat related outcomes as identified from the literature have not changed much, 2011 census provides different census variables. Accordingly, a new set of varia...
