Abstract

Microbial contaminants exist in many forms ‐ amoebic cysts, protozoa, viruses, or bacteria ‐ and may be the result of human or animal waste. Even in small quantities, their presence in potable drinking water may result in an outbreak of waterborne disease, including cryptosporidiosis, dysentery, gastroenteritis, giardiasis, and infectious hepatitis. All cause painful symptoms, and many are fatal.
