Abstract

There have been a series of articles on the use of Wolbachia, an endosymbiotic bacterium, for mosquito vector control and also for interrupting the transmission of the dengue virus. Researchers have demonstrated the successful invasion of Wolbachia in caged vector mosquitoes and also showed the suppression of dengue transmission under semi-field conditions [1,2]. At this juncture, it is also essential to point out the limitations in the application of Wolbachia for disease vector control. This would help researchers pursue their work cautiously and also assist public health programme managers in developing a tangible method for the control of disease vectors.
