Abstract

Static, axially symmetric fields are considered in D-dimensional Einstein (Abelian gauge) dilaton gravity, with arbitrary values of the dilaton coupling constant . Its special cases correspond to the field limit of string theory and D-dimensional general relativity . A class of Weyl-type solutions, depending on three harmonic functions of two variables, is obtained. Among them we select a class of solutions which can be attributed to traversable wormholes with singular rings at their necks; the ring points combine the properties of twofold branching points and those of cosmic strings. Under natural additional requirements, (i) such wormholes have necessarily positive masses as viewed from both asymptotics and (ii) their characteristic length scale in the large charge limit is of the order of the `classical radius' .
