Abstract

The purpose of this study is to explore the status of reservation tourism development in the western United States. Data were compiled from research on tourism development and from questionnaires mailed to tribal managers or councils. Tourism offers the greatest potential for economic development on some reservations. Many managers recognize the advantages of tribal control of tourism development and are attaining an understanding of their tourism markets. If appropriately managed, tourism is frequently viewed as a force for cultural revitalization and maintenance of cultural identity, and as a means of increasing understanding of Indian culture. Tribes actively promoting tourism cite increased self-esteem, self-determination, and economic independence.
