Abstract
Research on the history of the German Democratic Republic (GDR) has intensified considerably in the Federal Republic of Germany (FRG), especially in the past decade. The number of publications in the GDR itself on its own development has also increased considerably during this same period. The GDR's forty years of history—including the history leading up to its founding the GDR has existed now almost as long as the German Empire—has on the whole now been well researched.
