Abstract

Working as a regional psychiatrist in Western Australia requires work-time to be divided between clinical roles as a generalist psychiatrist within the public mental health system, and as a clinical academic focusing on research, advocacy, and teaching in psychiatry across rural and remote Australia. The challenge during 2020 has been ensuring clinical service and teaching delivery across a large landmass of more than 2 660 000 km2 with communities often spread hundreds of kilometres apart. Western Australia is about as rural and remote an area as you can find anywhere in the world, leading to unique challenges in treating and transporting patients with mental health conditions.
