Abstract
Morphactins, fluorene-carboxylic acid derivatives reported highly active in a number of plant morphogenic responses, retard growth and severely inhibit chlorophyll synthesis in Welwitschia mirabilis callus cultures. No organogenic response was elicited. Cell membranes appeared particularly susceptible to morphactin. ER and dictyosomes became progressively vesiculated; in the chloroplasts thylakoids were swollen and their lamellae distorted and few grana were present.
