Abstract
Before Wells embarked on the study of science he was already well acquainted with such diverse social settings as the unprofitable china-shop in Bromley, Up Park, the gracious home where his mother was housekeeper, two drapery shops and a chemist’s shop, where he served aborted apprenticeships, and Midhurst Grammar School, where he spent a year as a student teacher. All these scenes were later to feature in the novels of his middle period, described with great vividness and peopled with vigorous life-like characters presumably modelled on Wells’s former acquaintances. Yet such scenes and characters formed no part of his early writing.
