Abstract

The proposed twin turbine system consists of a Wells turbine with guide vanes and an impulse turbine for energy conversion from the oscillating airflow. It was hypothesized that by coupling these axial flow turbines together, the pneumatic energy from oscillating airflow was captured by the Wells turbine as main turbine at low flow rate and by the impulse turbine as booster turbine at high flow rate. In this study, as the first step, the performance characteristics of Wells turbine with guide vanes in steady flows was investigated experimentally by model testing. Then, a quasi-steady numerical analysis was performed to estimate the effect of guide vanes on the mean efficiency of the twin turbine system in unsteady flows.
