Abstract

The drought and extremely high temperatures in summer 2003 led to withering symptoms in the chestnut stands in Canton Ticino. Stands on the peripheries of forests and those on shallow soil sites were most heavily hit. Investigation shows that the chestnut in the area studied has no protective mechanisms to prevent excessive transpiration.
