Abstract This chapter discusses the development of GM (genetically modified) rodents like laboratory mice and rats (gene modification, and gene modification, phenotypes and harm); social, ethical and welfare concerns (general ethical concerns, genetic modification, animal impact and animal welfare, animal numbers, methods of genetic modification, benefits and disbenefits of genetic modification of rodents, and translation research); and application of ethical frameworks (a note on the popularization of some GM and mutant animals).
