Abstract

The paper presents stress intensity factors for half-elliptical surface cracks in typical residual stress fields in butt joints for both thin and thick plates. To make the results more general, parametric descriptions of the residual stress fields have been proposed in this paper. Stress intensity factors (Mode I) containing the parameters describing the stress fields are calculated using the finite element method. The surface cracks studied cover a wide range of geometries in relation to the cracked body and the residual stress fields. Some features of surface cracks in welding residual stress fields and the importance of residual stresses in linear elastic fracture mechanics (LEFM) are discussed.
