Abstract

Cracks were found in the weld metal (WM) of weld-section of side shell of drilling-well oil storage ship when performing post weld radiographic examination. The cracks were subjected to detailed metallographic analysis and the fracture surfaces were observed visually and using SEM. The results indicate that the cracks were embedded in middle of multiple beads of WM. The fracture surface reveals the dendritic solidification structure of WM, which contains impurity element sulfur and other alloy elements (Ti, Al, and O) originating from the filler core of welding wire. The embedded cracks are a type of weld hot crack, the solidification crack. The failure mechanism is identified to be welding hot cracking.
