Abstract

This chapter describes a military-themed café, Café Patriot. It demonstrates how the café's proprietors and war veterans are aimed to heighten conscious awareness of military conflict, although the literature on militarization emphasizes the unconscious ways in which militarization infects and spreads through a society. The goal of the café was to have an antidepressive effect on fighters and to provoke critical thinking about war among non-combatant patrons. The chapter highlights the café's place in the territorial conflict that can only be understood after recalling that the Ukrainian military had been significantly downsized. The strategic way in which Café Patriot elevated the position of veterans exemplifies everyday war.
