Abstract

Obesity is a major risk factor for obstructive sleep apnea. Obesity affects OSA mechanistically through changes in the upper airway and affects ventilation and hypoxemia. While weight loss is frequently recommended to obese patients with OSA, weight loss outcomes vary depending on the strategy. This article will review current weight loss strategies including surgical, pharmacologic, dietary, exercise and their impacts on weight management and OSA. The effects of CPAP on weight management will be discussed.
