Abstract

Summary A new genus and a new species, Weeksella virosa , are proposed. Each of the 29 strains placed in the new species was examined for 129 characteristics, including reactions in 58 enzyme tests (API ZYM System). These bacteria are rod-shaped, aerobic, Gram-negative, non-motile, and non-saccharolytic. The mean G+C content of the DNA of five representative strains is 37.3 ± 0.5 mol%. DNAs from the nine strains tested were 96% to 100% related to labelled DNA from the type strain, 9751 (= NCTC 11634). All strains of the new species were isolated from human clinical specimens, of which the urinogenital tract was the most common source.
