Abstract

Using self-management strategies may increase the level of physical activity (PA) and improve health-related quality of life (HRQoL) among people with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). However, access to self-management strategies are often sparse, and it is still unclear whether web-based self-management strategies are effective. <b>Aim:</b> To investigate the effect of web-based support for self-management on PA and HRQoL among people with COPD. In a randomised controlled trial 1, 144 participants with COPD will be randomised to either the intervention group or control. All participants will get usual care, receive a pedometer and information about the importance of PA. Participants in the intervention will in addition, get access to the COPD Web, an interactive website that supports self-management with focus on PA. The effect on participants’ PA and HRQoL, is assessed using indicator questions on PA from the National Board of Health and Welfare in Sweden and the EQ5D. So far, 84 participants (age 70 years, FEV1predicted 59%, 38 Women) have completed the 3-month follow-up and was included in an interim analysis. PA but not HRQoL seems to be improved for the intervention group compared the control group. The preliminary results indicate that web-based support may increases the level of PA among people with COPD. 1Stenlund, T. et al. BMJ Open 2019;9:e030788
