Abstract

It is well known that a sound software process is the basis for a successful software project. The paper discusses the development of a Web based software process management and monitoring tool designed to assist in producing better software projects. The process management tool, developed in the programming language Java is accessed through standard World Wide Web browsers. This provides access to project management information in a transparent platform independent manner to geographically distributed programming teams and project managers. Integrity and confidentiality of project information is preserved. Java was chosen as it can be used with standard World Wide Web browsers; it is architecturally neutral and provides good support for graphics. Numerous benefits are derived from this project. Included in these are: global access to project information allowing continuous product development to take place and be managed; a reduction in the number of necessary paper documents; and a higher level of management efficiency through the continuous availability of project information with an expected reduction in cycle time.
