Abstract

It turns out that a trawl of online medical message boards can unearth medicines' hidden downsides. A team in New York City and Jerusalem mined more than a decade of posts on medical forums for stories about people's experiences with different medications. They say their algorithm could have detected bad reactions not uncovered by clinical trials, years before they came to the attention of the US Food and Drug Administration.
