Abstract

Abstract This paper considers the principal themes of classical optics which principally emerged in the seventeenth century. These themes - rays, mechanical effects, waves, colour and polarisation - are woven together especially in the explanation of the rainbow. They are also entwined with optical technology and the physiology of human vision.1
