Abstract

Some of the same radar technology used by the U.S. Navy in missile guidance and tracking operations is being employed in the first full‐time phased array radar facility, unveiled on 24 April by the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration's National Severe Storm Laboratory in Norman, Oklahoma. The facility, known as the National Weather Radar Testbed, could help meteorologists forecast earlier warnings for tornadoes and other types of severe weather. The facility serves as a testbed to determine whether the phased array radar will become the next significant technological advancement in improving U.S. weather services.
