Abstract

Recent trends in weather sections of major newspapers were examined for possible effects USA Today may have had on weather pages of such newspapers. Newspapers in the 14 cities where USA Today was first published were studied six months before the Gannett paper's debut, one year later and about 30 months later. Analysis of 26 newspapers showed most weather sections had changed during the period studied, and USA Today probably had some effect on those changes. However, USA Today appears not to nave had the impact many in the industry assumed it would. Generally, there was no rush to produce weather packages resembling those in USA Today.
