Abstract
The paper deals with assessment of the wear resistance characteristics of steel 20 with a carburized surface layer formed during thermochemical treatment in fluid petroleum pitch, in comparison with the method of carburizing in barium carbonate (BaCO3). Tribotests are carried out using the block-on-ring and four-ball arrangements. The wear index, wear, and wear rate of steel are determined. It is shown that the use of thermochemical treatment in fluid petroleum pitch improves considerably the wear resistance of steel 20.
