Abstract

Experiments were conducted to determine the wear rate of lubricated sliding surfaces using a variation of the standard ASTM D 4172-82 four-ball wear test. The relative displacement between the balls was recorded continuously during these tests using a linear variable differential transducer (LVDT) and a data acquisition system. The LVDT output was then used to calculate the variation of the wear scar diameter (WSD) and the wear rate. It was shown that the WSD calculated from a 20 h test has an excellent agreement with the measured WSD of 11 discrete tests. Analysis of these data provided several useful parameters that could be used to evaluate lubricants.
