Abstract

Piston-cylinder liner and flywheel plays major role in passenger vehicles. Wear resistance provides good service life to the material, which is the most important parameter. Load, sliding speed and sliding distance are taken into account to optimise the wear parameter of Gray Cast Iron (GCI). Dry sliding wear tests were conducted using L9 orthogonal array based on Taguchi’s Design of Experiments technique. To analyse the specific wear rate (SWR), signal to noise ratio analysis and ANOVA were used. Load 45 N Sliding Speed 1.5 m/s and Sliding Distance 300 m are the optimum process parameters for obtaining minimum SWR. The predicted S/N of SWR is 22.74 mm3/Nm and experimental S/N of SWR is 22.53 mm3/Nm. The Taguchi technique holds good for optimisation of the wear parameters.
