Abstract

The wear behavior of gamma irradiated polymer composite sliding against ceramic surface was studied using UHMWPE and TiN deposited steel surface. UHMWPE composite samples were irradiated by Gamma (γ) source Ir192 isotopes at room temperature. The morphology and crystalline nature of the UHMWPE composite were characterized using SEM and XRD respectively. FTIR result exhibits the changes in the functional groups and the cross linkage of the composites attained by gamma irradiation. Due to combined effect of reinforcement and cross linked structure of the composites, different wear mechanisms were existed during sliding motion. The worn surface analysis exhibits that the adhesion and ploughing are the major wear mechanisms experienced for the testing conditions.
