Abstract
A map describing the crater-wear characteristics of uncoated high-speed steel (HSS) cutting tools during dry turning operations is presented. Combining this with an earlier map for flank-wear characteristics, an overall wear damage map for uncoated HSS tools during turning operations is proposed. In this diagram, there exists a region where machining conditions are such that the overall wear damage to the HSS tool is at a minimum. The implications of this diagram are then discussed in the context of practical machining operations.
