Abstract

The saturation of the ion cyclotron instability of a plasma with a transverse current is studied in frame of the weak turbulence theory for the case when the current velocity is less than the thermal velocity of ions. It is shown that the saturation is mainly due to a nonlinear scattering of cyclotron oscillations by free ions whereas decay of waves, induced scattering of waves from electron and induced scattering from ion polarization clouds of virtual wave are of no importance. Steady state turbulence level related to the first process and the rate of turbulent heating of electrons are estimated.
