Abstract

The study of the manuscript by M. M. Bakhtin’s “Francois Rabelais in the History of Realism” (1938–1940) actualizes the issue of foreign scientific sources, that were hardly accessed and extremely limited in USSR. The article deals with the circle of French Rabelaisistics of the 1930s used by Bakhtin. On the example of Georges Lote’s monograph la Vie et l’œuvre de François Rabelais (1938), the abstract of which is kept with copybooks of Rabelais manuscript, the study shows us how Bakhtin worked on sources during the preparation of the first edition of his book. Archival documents of the Russian National Library are examined, the article highlights the procedure of foreign desiderates receipt in the late 1930s. On the basis of materials of the Department of Archival Documents of the Russian National Library and “Rossica” Foundation, the history and chronology of entering the library and processing of a copy of the monograph by G. Lote are traced. An assumption is made and justified, according to which Bakhtin read and outlined his text precisely on this copy.
